Fabulous Year for Stuart Liddell
To crown a remarkably successful year in major piping competitions Stuart Liddell took most of the honours at the annual event organised by the Scottish Piping Society of London. He won the biggest prize, the Bratach Gorm for piobaireachd and also the Gillies Cup for open piobaireachd, completing an infrequent double.
Earlier this year Stuart was named the 2009 Champion at the Glenfiddich Invitational Solo Piping Championships held in the great hall of Blair Castle, the Duke of Atholl's private residence. In Inverness he won the coveted Clasp for the second time, having first won it in 2007 and, in August, on his first visit to the Skye Games Portree he won the Dunvegan Medal. Such has been his success that the influential Piper and Drummer website referred to him as as “one of history's greatest all-round competitive Highland pipers.”
A former member of the Simon Fraser pipe Band, with whom he won several World Championships, Stuart is now Pipe Major of the Inveraray and District Pipe Band who, under Stuart’s guidance, have gone from the Juvenile Grade to Grade One with unprecedented rapidity. With Stuart’s track-record and experience, they will undoubtedly prosper in the pipe band world’s top flight.
Stuart’s debut CD, Inveroran was published by Macmeanmna three years ago and was named Album of the year by the aforementioned Piper and Drummer website.
